How often should I service my HVAC?
How often should I service my furnace and Air Conditioner?
Starting with a furnace, we usually suggest a yearly service routine, but not advised to stretch past 2 years. This gives you the peace of mind knowing that all mechanical parts of your furnace are being looked after. By servicing yearly, you are maintaining the longevity of your furnace, ensuring you get the most out of it.
An air conditioner is a little different in Calgary, we suggest doing every two years, during the spring.
These are simply a suggested servicing routine to maintain optimal running efficiency and longevity of your system. These also do not include the need to have your ducts cleaned every 3 to 5 years.
Why does my Air Purifier need to be serviced?
Even though a UV air purifier only contains an electrical component and a UV light bulb, maintenance still needs to be completed on it. The light bulb that is used in a UV air purifier is usually only good for around 9000 hours of use or 12 months, meaning that the bulb will lose about 15% of its efficiency after the year of constant use. The UV bulb needs to be changed at minimum every 2 years to help maintain the best air quality for you and your family.
There is also the replacement of the furnace filter periodically. These are far more frequent, every 60 to 90 days, to make sure no dust, hair, or small particles harm your furnace’s components. This is typically a do-it-yourself maintenance. However, if you’re ever not sure what type of filter you need to purchase, it is always good to ask your HVAC technician during the furnace maintenance.
How do I know when my humidifier needs to be serviced?
For the humidifier, you are looking for things like your home feels dry, or overly humid and possibly even a musty smell. The humidifier can be a straightforward thing to forget about in your HVAC system, but it is critical to maintaining your safety and your home’s health.
It is critical to service this little machine, like the other parts, yearly. Usually, the best time is just before temperatures dip, as will the humidity in the air. Not only do the mechanical parts of this unit need to be serviced, but so does the filter inside. This, when used daily, needs to be changed every 90 days, much like the furnace filter. Finally, it’s also good during servicing for a professional to make sure there are no air leakages from the furnace duct to the filter and back.
What does it cost to service my HVAC system?
The cost of an HVAC servicing can range widely by company, and by the amount of work that needs to be completed. Between the cost per hour for the technician and the cost of services needing to be done, changes the breakdown. The cost per hour can range from $100 to $150, while the basic services range between $100 to $500.
Noting that repairs can have a much higher cost, but a discussion of approval happens before we complete work.
When looking to diagnose your HVAC system when little to no air circulation occurs, these are common issues that can happen that can sometimes be simple at home fixes. Should you feel it is something more it is always good to get a qualified technician to complete any work you are not comfortable in doing.
